  153. To use this tutorial, resize this window so that you can see the main Fonts Managerｪ window, AND this window.  You may switch back and forth by simply clicking in each of these two windows.

After each small lesson, quit Fonts Managerｪ, restart your Mac, and open Fonts Managerｪ again to view your new font list (in the Fonts menu).  Remember the font list will contain only fonts that have a screen font (Type 1 or TrueType) present.  You won't see every single printer font in a fonts menu.

  158. ･･LESSON:  Make a 'set'
  159. 1.  Click on the 'sets' menu (where it says 'NO fonts' now).  Select 'Mac OS fonts'.  You should see the 9 basic font suitcases listed on the right (10 or 11 for Mac OS 8  -  And if QuickDraw GX is installed, you'll see 3 or 4 additional fonts).
  160. 2.  Now select the first font suitcase in the list below 'Mac OS fonts' and click the button 'Remove selected suitcase'.  Notice the 'sets' menu changes to 'Custom' to let you know you've made a change.
  161. 3.  Now click on 'Custom' and select 'Save Set...'
  162. 4.  Type 'my set' and hit return.  You've just named your first set!

  177. ･･LESSON:  Add a suitcase or printer font to 'set'
  178. 1.  Select the first suitcase in the top list on the left half of the window.  Click the button 'Add suitcase to Custom Set'.  Notice the suitcase appears on the right, and the 'sets' menu changes to 'Custom'.
  179. 2.  Select the first printer font in the bottom list on the left of the window (if you see Empty List, skip step 2).  Click the button 'Add printer font to Custom Set'.  Notice the printer font appears on the right, and the 'sets' menu changes to 'Custom'.

  183. 1.  Select 'Save Sets to desktop' from the File menu.
  184. 2.  A new file called 'Fonts Managerｪ Sets' will appear on the desktop.  Distribute this file to your workgroups if needed.
  185. 3.  If you are about to upgrade to a new version of Fonts Managerｪ, you'll need this file to open for import, so you don't lose all your sets!

  189. 1.  Select 'Open saved Sets' from the File menu.
  190. 2.  Locate and open 'Fonts Managerｪ Sets'.  It may exist on any local disk, or a server for workgroup distribution.

  193. 10 Sets to choose from?

  195. There are 11 'sets' you may make use of in your daily routine.  Ten in the list PLUS the 'Custom' set.  The 'Custom' set is a working set, and is normally used until you make a permanent set by saving it.

  197. You can rename each of the 10 sets.

  199. When you save a set, you may then immediately rename it, to make it unique.

  201. To 'erase' a set, simply save the 'NO fonts' list to any set you wish to 'erase'.

  225. ATMｪ version 4.0 works best.  If you have version 3.8.3 or later, you're OK.
  226.  
  227. ATMｪ, when installed, will use the screen font's 'map', together with the printer font's 'vectors' to produce a smooth, scaled point size on screen.

  229. ATMｪ requires at least ONE bit-mapped (screen) font, along with its PostScriptｪ counterpart in the Fonts folder, to do its scaling magic.

ATMｪ also requires several other fonts.  To ensure these other fonts are always present in the Fonts folder, put an x in the box at the bottom of the Fonts Managerｪ main window.  This will preserve the following suitcases/(and printer fonts):  Adobe Sans MM/(AdobeSanMM), Adobe Serif MM/(AdobeSerMM), Symbol/(Symbo), and Zapf Dingbats/(ZapfDin).

  235. Also, ATMｪ enables the printing of scaled PostScriptｪ fonts to a QuickDrawｪ printer, such as the StyleWriter series, or the Personal LaserWriter LS/300.

  247. A bit-mapped or screen font file is used to produce type on the screen.

  249. It will have a point size after its name, like 'Geneva 9'.

  256. To install fonts, drop font suitcases and PostScriptｪ font files onto the 'closed' System Folder.

  258. DO NOT install a screen font file or TrueTypeｪ font file if it is NOT in a suitcase.  It will eventually be damaged, and you will NOT be able to use that font with Fonts Managerｪ.  Make a new suitcase for it, or drop it inside an existing suitcase...

  260. Originally, before System 7.1, ALL screen or TrueTypeｪ fonts were contained in suitcases.  Actually ONE suitcase, called System.  Then the Fonts folder was born, and all fonts live there.  BUT SUITCASES ARE STILL IMPORTANT!

  262. The Fonts folder in the System Folder should NOT have any subfolders inside, as those would be invisible to the System.

  267. There are two types of font files that can live in a font suitcase:  bit-mapped (screen) fonts, and TrueTypeｪ fonts.

  269. NEVER let a screen font file (bitmap or TrueTypeｪ) sit loose in the Fonts folder.  It will very likely be damaged soon, if it is not already.  Keep all screen font files and TrueTypeｪ fonts in suitcases, safe and dry...

  272. How do I stop using Fonts Managerｪ?

  274. Easy!

  276. Just launch Fonts Managerｪ one last time.
  277. Select 'ALL fonts' from the 'Sets' popup menu.
  278. Add the 'x' to the ATMｪ box at the bottom.
  279. Quit.

  281. The 'Fonts' folder in the System Folder should have all of your fonts inside.

  283. Inside the System Folder, trash the following two folders:

  297. This version of Fonts Managerｪ can be used with ANY version of Mac OS, whether US or Localized for another country.

  299. If you're not using the US Mac OS, you may find that the custom set 'Mac OS fonts' does not work.  This is correct.  You'll need to make your own set for this, and the 'Mac OS fonts' set is for US systems only (sorry).

  302. Is a Restart really necessary?

  306. For the Finder to update its font list, you must restart.

  308. There are two work arounds for this, neither of which I approve:

  310. - quitting the Finder

  312. - removing all fonts to the desktop, then dropping all of them back onto the 'closed' System Folder (this method takes longer than a restart)

  314. Consider Fonts Managerｪ in the same family as the Mac OS Extensions Managerｪ, and you'll appreciate the restart...

  319. If a font is 'jagged' on screen, the bit-mapped (screen) font of the exact point size is missing.

  321. If printing is okay, then install Adobe Type Manager (ATMｪ).  It will use the screen and printer fonts together to produce a 'scaled' bit map of the correct size for the screen.

  376. A PostScriptｪ font file consists of a scalable set of vectors that a PostScriptｪ printer (or ATMｪ) can use to scale the exact point size you need for printing.
